Orchid News Around the World

The Pioneer Press posted a spiffy little article on vanilla.  Its surprising how short the flower lasts!

There’s been many articles on the ghost orchid in bloom in Florida.  But I wanted pictures!  Patience has paid off.  News-Press.com was very generous and posted a set of pictures!  (The first of which is spectacular!)

Susan Taylor of Bella Online wrote a nice summary of the orchid life cycle.

Physorg.com reports on a new species of Coelogyne, here.  Picture included in article.

The KansasCity.com news ran an AP story on this orchid.  (There’s a picture too.)

The Guardian (UK publication) posted an interesting story about the attempts to bring the lady’s slipper orchid back into the wild in Britain.

Susan Taylor has her 16th edition of orchid growing tips, available on her site.

The St. Petersburg Times (Florida) posted a lovely article about a woman who protects orchids along US highway 92.

The Journal Gazette posted about the vanilla orchid and the difference between vanilla extract and vanillin.  And they have a wonderful sounding group of recipes.  (Do you often think of how tasty orchids can be?  I usually think about them being pretty!)

Quick snippet of the story:

“The Minnesota Natural Heritage Program is seeking volunteers to spend one or more days between July 6 and 9 helping to count Western Prairie Fringed Orchids in the vicinity of Crookston, Fertile, and Thief River Falls.”

The Herald Tribune (in southwest Florida) posted a interesting story about scientists trying to save the mule-ear orchid.
